About Me

I am driven by the excitement of exploration and discovery.

I am an scientist and an artist. My work in both of these areas shares a common factor: creative inspiration that stems from exploration and discovery.

In the case of my contributions to science, I have explored ways in which the hard structures of inorganic materials can be moulded by the “soft” structures formed by organic molecules. This led me to discover of a new class of materials!

My clay art builds on this exploration–discovery–inspiration dynamic, as well as on decades of artistic work across different media. My scientific journey has taught me the value of careful observation, systematic investigation and an understanding of the relationships between the chemical structures of materials and their properties. My artistic journey has taught me the how to express my vision within the physical constraints of the medium used and to translate the intangible emotions that fire my imagination into a physical form.

My work with clay builds on these experiences. It provides a unique cauldron in which my fascination with unusual natural and human-made forms, structures and patterns, is blended with my interests in ancient artefacts, palaeography, and alchemy and seasoned by my emotional responses to conflict, love, and loss.
